“In Hollywood if you don’t have a shrink, people think you’re crazy.”
Johnny Carson
Therapy for mental or emotional health is also known as counseling, talk therapy, or psychotherapy. It generally involves talking with a psychiatrist, psychologist or other trained mental health professionals. But there have been friends, loved ones and trusted mentors around for eons who have listened patiently to others and offered advice. They provided talk therapy as well. Over the years many people have proclaimed other outlets as their form of “therapy” – from baking bread to running marathons. I have found writing wonderfully therapeutic. So personally I’m a fan of anything that helps you be in control of your life – as long as that does not also harm you.
The goal of therapy is developing the ability to respond to life’s challenges with healthy coping skills.
My life was a challenge from the beginning. As a young child I created my own methods for coping using things I could understand at that age. As a result, my methods were very visual and the graphics rather childish. So my own journey in “therapy” has been rather long.
